Company history

With equal footing in theater and film, Firefly has been telling compelling stories for more than 25 years.

Founded by actor and producer Steven Klein, Firefly first focused solely on theater, and its productions have won dozens of awards for shows in Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Belfast, Off-West End London, and Off-Broadway.

With a belief that films could be made with the same cross-disciplinary collaboration typically found in theater, Steven partnered with Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen to found a film collective, making 35 digital shorts from 2001 – 2005. The success of this project led to the expansion of the company into Firefly Theater & Films. Firefly’s films have since earned an Emmy nomination and dozens of other awards after premiering at dozens of festivals internationally, including Sundance, SXSW, TIFF, and LAFF.

In addition – in collaboration with its sister company, Firefly Fundraising – Firefly crafts film content for nonprofits, like these pieces for Theatre Communications Group, the Genesis Prize, and the Walton Family Foundation.

Firefly’s founder, Steven Klein, speaks and writes about the actor-producer path, including on his intermittent blog, in an essay in Back Stage West, on the Up Next Podcast, and at the Aspen Institute. He also spoke about the storytelling challenges of documentary film at SXSW V2V. In addition to his work on behalf of Firefly Theater & Films and Firefly Fundraising, Steven sits on the board of advisors of Endcrawl, a platform for managing film and television credits; chairs the board of directors of La Maida Project; vice chairs the board of directors of the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center; and sits on the School Site Council of LAUSD’s Ivanhoe Elementary. He received his BA from Yale.
